Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and PvE Damage.

For instance, a weapon with the upgrade template that ends in % will gain 3damage to attack each time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

Item upgrading costs crests and the item's current level. The cost increases as the item level increases.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into armor, weapons, and trinkets in order to provide a stat bonus or extra impact while they're being used. These can be obtained by crafting, buying from vendors, trading with other players or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot for them. The item must have been at a minimum upgraded to blue level for a component to be applied. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and can't be used multiple times or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a special type of upgrade component that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment, as well as some of the non-ascended back items. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging ascended gear or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's used on (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players to create stronger versions of that equipment that require less Upgrade Crystals than is required to reach the same upgrade level through normal methods.

A boost upgrade is a way to modify the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. Once the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist the upgrades can be made at the Portative Forging Station. They can be dropped by enemies when upgrading other gear or purchasing them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals.

Each upgrade increases the probability that a better-quality version of the item will be dropped in the next reset. This gives players a reason to upgrade their gear even when they're not sure how much it will be improved following a reset.

The process of upgrading an item can be expensive, and it is possible that the item will eventually become obsolete, or even break, in the event that the upgrade fails. Upgrade Crystals and assist powder are also destroyed when an upgrade fails. Cash shop items can be used to reduce or eliminate the risk of failure. Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade parts which can be put in special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs can boost the performance of nodes within a radius, which includes any existing attaches. Glyphs can be upgraded in various ways, and we recommend upgrading them to 15 levels whenever you can.

There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of a Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain unlimited-use gathering tools and also through Faction Crypt raids. Every Faction Crypt has the possibility of dropping one of the numerous Glyphs, and there are some rare Glyphs that can be obtained as drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.

Leveling

Upgrades to armor set pieces also improve the strength of their base defense, while upgrades to weapon items increase their base damage and also increase their strength and dexterity.

All items can be upgraded up to five times, with the exception for hero gear, which can be upgraded eight times. Each time you upgrade an object, it has a chance of failing. The failure rate increases when you exceed the maximum number. Failures will cause the item to go to its original state, requiring the player to spend more money on materials than they would had they stopped upgrading at the highest number of upgrades.

If an item fails to upgrade the amount of experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. In addition the item will lose any gained bonuses, including crit chance and attack damage, and all additional effects associated with the effect (for example, increased heal over time or the speed of reloading). However, the user can continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest. This means that the weapon that is upgraded receives a crit chance boost, the increase will be applied prior to any damage from attacks increases.
