Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, boosting its base stats or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, like rings can be upgraded to stronger bases. Items with strong bases, like Titans from eth, have no change in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into trinkets, weapons, armor and tools for gathering, offering an attribute bonus or extra effect when the equipment is used. They can be bought from vendors, or found as loot by enemies, or gotten from missions and chests. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level to upgrade.

To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, the player will need to select it and then click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview that shows the expected upgrade statistics and the necessary component or materials.

There are three types of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, such as gems, are able to be used on any kind of equipment. If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces the glyphs by a different one the old one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant variations from earlier versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks and each item can be upgraded a certain number of times before it's "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level up however the materials required do not increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a select few items and maximize the impact of those items rather than spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.
