Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Discourse Construction Tests

The discourse completion test (DCT) is a widely used instrument in the field of pragmatic research. It has many advantages, but also a few disadvantages. Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate proficiency who gave responses to DCTs and MQs. They were also required to provide reflections on their evaluations and refusals in RIs. The results revealed that CLKs frequently chose to reject native Korean norms of pragmatism. Their decisions were influenced primarily by four factors: their personalities and multilingual identities, their ongoing lives and their relationship affordances. These findings have pedagogical implications for L2 Korean assessment.

The MQ data were analyzed to determine the participants' rational choices. The data was categorized according Ishihara (2010)'s definition of pragmatic resistance. The results showed that CLKs on average, did not conform to the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. Furthermore, they were clearly aware of their pragmatism. They attributed their choice to learner-internal factors such as their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also spoke of external factors, such as relationships and advantages. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors led to more relaxed performance in regards to the linguistic and intercultural rules of their university.

The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures and penalties they could be subject to when their social norms were not followed. They were worried that their native interactants might consider them "foreigners" and believe they are unintelligent. These findings suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are not the norm for Korean learners. They may still be useful for official Korean proficiency tests. This will allow them to better understand the impact of different cultural contexts on the pragmatic behavior and classroom interactions of students from L2.
