The amount of Growth Stones required to upgrade an item will depend on its rarity. Typically rare (blue) weapons require more than one green Growth Stone to reach their next level, while uncommon armor requires just one green or blue Growth Stone.
After selecting the item to upgrade, the player has to select the number of Growth Stones that they want to use and pay the cost. When you choose an upgrade component to slot into an item the game will show an open window that displays the requirements required for that item. These include the type of item (either Weapon or Armor) the tier of that item, the upgrade Token required, as well as the amount of progress needed to complete the upgrade.
