How to Replace an audi a3 keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they perform different functions however the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor.
