WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader
Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by +3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.
The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless it has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like Eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the requirement to roll for a perfect version.
Recycle Points
The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item upgrade is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create the enchantments.
You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current it is recommended you visit the upgrader each couple of weeks.
The cost of upgrades will vary based on the current level of the item being upgraded but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment from other sources. For example upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points, while purchasing the same item from another player will costs 105.
Valorstones
Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase tools, armor, weapon and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for different currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased, it can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor with the help of button, which will show a preview of the item when it is upgraded when the player has enough materials.
Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot of the item and the current item level. For instance, weapons will cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Certain upgrades provide a discount on the Flightstones. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.
Item upgraders can be found in many places on the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade items discount as well as a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or complete quests.
In contrast to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no item upgrader available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades are acquired via a variety of means which is both an improvement and a drawback.
In Season 3, many new features have been added to the upgrade system. After a player has earned an upgrade to a particular level for an item in an armor slot, upgrading additional items to the same level will cost less even if they belong to a different gear set.
The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is account-wide. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievements.
Crests
When upgrading equipment in WoW players have a couple of choices. They can use Flightstones that are a general upgrade currency that is accessible to all players, or crests, which are more specialized and consumed during upgrades on specific levels of items. Crests are an integral component of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System introduced in version 10.1. They are available in four ranks.
The first thing to be aware of is that crests are only able to be used to purchase equipment that is of a particular rank, and each rank has its own requirements for its upgrade path. The simplest and simplest upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade can require up to 20 crests, based on the type of gear being upgraded.
Players can obtain crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, whether that means walking around and doing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons of all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons to obtain endgame gear. These crests are then exchanged with an item upgrades upgrader, such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and paths.
Using these new currencies isn't that difficult, but the system introduces some changes to the overall upgrade process. For instance, when an item reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is intended to allow players to upgrade their equipment to the highest level possible on all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.
Another important change is that crests only have one purpose, so it's important to use them properly. For instance it's a good idea to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests with the best equipment available and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to create. This is particularly true for items such as trinkets and rings that fill multiple slots. The discount for the entire account is only applicable when all slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
